The visual impact of GIS-related products can be highly compelling. GreenInfo Network has specialized in effective graphic design since its founding, and offers these design capacities:
- Information graphics and special posters: With maps as one element, we frequently develop “identity” or info-graphic posters, which mix images, tables, text, photos and an overall graphic design framework (sample at right). These products often take considerable effort but can pay off with impact that goes far beyond what just a map or a report alone might offer.
- Reports and brochures: We can prepare simple three-fold brochures custom printed on our in-house lasers, or complex, offset-printed reports, depending on your needs. In some cases, all we provide are maps, in others we provide full project management and content development. For some groups, a brochure laid out in Microsoft Word is exactly right, for others, full-featured illustration or page-layout software is needed and we can apply either to your needs. At right is a before and after image of a map used in an advocacy brochure - the left is what the client gave us and the right is our re-design, as part of the brochure.
- PowerPoint presentations: We create graphic templates for your PowerPoint slides as well as entire PowerPoint productions (including message objective, text preparation, charts and graphs, photos and other elements). Our approach is to blend appropriate graphic effectiveness with sensitivity to how you communicate and who your target audience is (see samples at bottom).
A note about offset printing and GIS: if your project will result in an offset-printed document (report, poster, etc.), it’s important to tell us this as early as possible – the pathway from GIS to offset printing can be complex if not laid out early on in a project.
Some examples of our design work include:
- Baldwin Hills Conservancy (right, top): This agency is in charge of developing the site of the Baldwin Hills State Park, a large urban park just west of downtown Los Angeles. As part of extensive mapping work for the conservancy, GreenInfo prepared this trails poster, showing current trail loops in the area.
- Atlas of Renewable Energy Sources: (right,) North West SEED asked GreenInfo Network to help it develop a printed atlas of the western United States showing the landscape of wind, solar, geothermal and biomass capacities. GreenInfo GIS staff worked extensively on data and objectives for the many needed maps, then brought in an external designer to assist with the full design of the final report. The resulting product is an outstanding example of an informative atlas and can be viewed on the web.
- SPUR Newsletter: (bottom right): This map is part of system developed for the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, and shows details of key area for urban revitalization in San Francisco.
While our staff has substantial design skills, we also use outside consultants and advisors as needed, to ensure the highest quality designs possible. Below are examples of brochures created for GreenInfo projects - see BlackGraphics for more information.
