Service Area Targeting for a Conservation Corps

The Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC), based in South Central and East Los Angeles, is one of the largest independent non-profit agencies in the nation. Founded in 1986 by former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Mickey Kantor, the LACC employs approximately 300 young adults as corpsmembers and 2,200 junior high and high school students annually to serve the greater Los Angeles community through environmental enhancement and community improvement projects.

GreenInfo Network prepared a series of maps for LACC to use in analyzing its target populations. The map shown at right is typical of those we prepared. It makes the point that the area served by the organization has one of the highest school dropout rates in the state of California, and helps define areas for LACC to focus its recruiting efforts.

Other maps in the series included: poverty, ethnicity, age, political districts. Each map not only shows several demographic-related variables but also uses charts and graphs to clearly show the data beind the message in each.
