Calculating Shared Use Benefits

Shared use mobility — scooters, carshare, bikeshare, and more — is a rapidly growing part of almost every city in the country. It's easy to see that shared vehicle models could lead to fewer people in single-occupancy vehicles, but what are the real impacts of each type of shared mobility in the city where you live? The Shared Use Mobility Center (SUMC) built an Excel-based Benefits Calculator to find out, and then they turned to us to transform that spreadsheet into a visually compelling, easy-to-use graphical calculator.

GreenInfo built a new platform from the ground up, leveraging an Excel data source and client-side calculations. We started by teasing apart the complicated analysis created by SUMC analysts in Excel. Then, using Adobe XD, we laid out a visual approach for distilling the complex results for each city. We then imported data and calculations directly from the Excel sheets to the website, adding sliders and inputs so users could custom tailor their results.

With high-level summary readouts, attractive iconography, and a simple map, the tool is both easy to use and quite powerful. It is also fully integrated into the Wordpress-based Mobility on Demand Learning Center, which we had developed for SUMC as part of a previous project.
