CALSTART, a statewide nonprofit that helps commercial and public vehicle fleets convert to cleaner fuels, wanted to help fleet managers understand the lifetime cost benefits of clean-fuel vehicles. CALSTART staff had developed a sophisticated Excel-based calculator, but it was difficult to use and hard to share. So thy approached GreenInfo about building a web-based version of their HVIP Total Cost of Ownership Estimator. The tool provides estimated cost comparisons between zero- and near-zero emission, medium- and heavy-duty buses and trucks and buses and trucks.

This project involved taking an extremely complex Excel spreadsheet and turning it into a working web application that's easy to use while also retaining the power and flexibility needed for an expert audience making complex decisions about expensive public infrastructure.

The calculator tool is part of the CaliforniaHVIP.org website, for which we also built an interactive map to show where vehicle purchase vouchers are being used across the state.
