Biking Burlington with LocalMotion

With tooltip open
Client:   LocalMotion

When the nonprofit LocalMotion needed to map the bikeways in and around Burington, Vermont, they came to us to build a location-aware, interactive map with local points of interest and attractions along the way. The application also includes a simple system for local businesses to provide sponsorship and advertise to map users.

Localmotion is Vermont's leading advocate for active transportation, vibrant communities, and safe streets. For many years, the nonprofit published a paper map every year, with a 25,000-copy run, and funded it with advertising from local businesses. The ever expanding use of smartphones had them thinking about an interactive version for a while, and the pandemic made it even more critical, with local advertisers less able to support print costs even while more people than ever were using bike paths for safe, close-to-home recreation. The launch of the map, hosted at www.vtbikeped.org, was even covered by local news outlet WCAX3 in late May 2021.

We built the application using Mapbox GL and a simple client-side application driven by a CSV out of Google Sheets for points of interest, including specifying which icon appears.
