Mapping Equity in New Education Law

National map
Client:   Learning Policy Institute

In 2015, the Obama Administration signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which included a number of key requirements meant to improve equity across the nation's public schools. When the Learning Policy Institute (LPI) began developing a report to understand how well states are achieving the act's equity goals, they tapped GreenInfo to develop an elegant interactive map and table that makes the extensive state-by-state information more accessible.

LPI brought a well-developed initial design to us, so we began there, modifying the design to work as well on mobile as on desktop, and refining it based on the actual data and content. We built the map use the D3 charting library, driven by CSV spreadsheet exports. We took special care in managing the changes in user experience between large and small screens, and between the familiar national map and the more visually complex table view. Popups on both map and table reveal more in-depth information about each state and link to national and state-level PDFs created by LPI.
